Question 1

What is IS 19967:2026?

Accepted Answer

IS 19967:2026 is the Indian Standard for EV charging cables, established by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 14 October 2026. It covers construction, insulation, thermal management and testing of flexible charging cables rated up to 1,100 V AC or 1,500 V DC, for AC Modes 1–3 and DC Mode 4.

Question 2

Is IS 19967 mandatory for EV charging cables in India?

Accepted Answer

Neither the PIB release nor the BIS establishment notice says it is mandatory or gives an enforcement date. A standard usually becomes compulsory only through a Quality Control Order that names it, and as of 20 October 2026 we have found none for IS 19967. Buyers can still write it into their specifications.

Question 3

Does IS 19967 replace IS 17017?

Accepted Answer

No. The BIS notice lists no withdrawn standard. IS 17017 covers the charging system and connectors, and IS 19967 covers the cable itself, so a charger tender can cite both. See our guide to BIS standards for EV chargers.

Question 4

How does IS 19967 relate to IEC 62893?

Accepted Answer

The January 2025 BIS draft followed the structure of the IEC 62893 charging-cable series. Both have sections for AC Modes 1–3, uncooled DC and actively cooled DC, and both use a 90 °C maximum conductor temperature. The release does not say whether the final standard is an identical adoption, so compare the published text before treating IEC test reports as equivalent.

Question 5

What should a CPO ask a charger vendor about cables now?

Accepted Answer

Ask for type-test evidence for the specific cable section, the continuous current rating at your site's ambient temperature, the cooling-system service terms where the cable is cooled, the replacement price and turnaround time, and the cable fault codes the charger reports to your backend.
