Türkiye Leads Europe in Electric Vehicle Fast-Charging Development

Türkiye leads Europe in electric vehicle fast-charging, offering more DC fast sockets per EV than any other country. Mustafa Yılmaz, head of the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK), shared these impressive updates on Türkiye’s EV progress.

In the past two years, electric vehicles in Türkiye increased from 6,000 to 154,000. Charging sockets also grew from 3,000 to 26,000. About one-third of these sockets are fast DC chargers. This rapid expansion positions Türkiye as a leader in EV infrastructure.

Türkiye has one charging socket for every six electric vehicles, while the EU average is one socket for 13 EVs. According to Yılmaz, 50% of Türkiye’s charging stations are “green stations,” running on renewable energy. About 75% of the electricity for charging comes from renewable sources.

The government has introduced strict regulations to ensure EV charging uses 100% renewable energy. Türkiye leads Europe in electric vehicle fast-charging with these innovative approaches.

In 2022, Türkiye had only five charging service providers. Today, 169 companies hold charging licenses, supporting Turkey’s electric vehicle fast-charging growth. However, 30 companies lost their licenses for not meeting obligations.

The country expects 1.3 million EVs and 142,000 charging points by 2030. By 2035, Türkiye predicts 3.3 million EVs and 273,000 chargers.

EV sales in Türkiye reflect this rapid growth. Between January and November 2024, 83,298 EVs were sold, a 39% increase from last year. In November alone, 13,554 EVs were sold, marking a 20.8% annual rise.

Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır stated that Türkiye aims to produce 1 million electric vehicles annually. Global brands like Ford, Toyota, and Renault have already moved next-generation vehicle production to Türkiye.

With a clear vision and strong policies, Turkey’s electric vehicle fast-charging market continues to grow at an unmatched pace.
