JSW MG Motor India is set to disrupt the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of its third electric car, JSW MG Windsor. The company, which already holds a 20% share in the Indian EV market, anticipates that this new offering will further boost electric vehicle sales, pushing them past the 50% mark compared to vehicles powered by internal combustion engines (ICE).
Currently, MG Motor India sells between 1,800 and 2,000 electric vehicles each month. Popular models like the Comet and ZS EV make up 35-40% of its total sales. With the introduction of MG Windsor, the company aims to significantly increase these numbers.
JSW MG Motor Widnsor: Driving Affordability with an Innovative Ownership Program
The anticipated rise in EV sales is largely attributed to a unique ownership program offered by the Windsor. This program is designed to make EV ownership more affordable by allowing customers to pay for the vehicle in two parts. The first is a fixed amount for the car, and the second is a variable cost based on battery usage.
Under this scheme, customers can pay ₹9.99 lakh for the car and an additional ₹3.5 per kilometer for the battery as per their usage. With EV running costs around ₹1 per kilometer, this brings the total operating cost to approximately ₹4.5 per kilometer. In comparison, an ICE vehicle costing ₹10 lakh would have running costs between ₹8 and ₹10 per kilometer.
“Customers will find owning an EV more affordable than owning a similar-priced ICE car because the running costs are significantly lower. This is a key advantage for EV buyers,” explained Satinder Singh Bajwa, Chief Business Officer at JSW MG Motor India.
The ₹3.5 per kilometer figure is calculated based on an average usage of 1,500 kilometers per month, allowing customers to reduce their overall monthly expenses on transportation.
JSW MG Windsor: A Mid-Sized SUV with Big Potential
The Windsor, which is priced at ₹10 lakh (excluding battery costs), offers a mid-sized SUV experience at a highly competitive price point. The unique battery rental model is expected to make this EV even more attractive to a broader audience by lowering the initial cost of acquisition.
By renting the battery on a pay-per-use basis at ₹3.5 per kilometer, MG Motor is removing one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption—the upfront cost of the battery. This innovative pricing model, known as Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), is a critical part of the company’s strategy to capture a larger share of the rapidly growing EV market in India.
Understanding the Battery-as-a-Service Model of the JSW MG Windsor
With JSW MG Windsor, MG Motor has introduced the Battery-as-a-Service model, an innovative approach that helps address two primary concerns of potential EV buyers: cost and maintenance.
Under this model, buyers pay for the car’s body while renting the battery based on their actual usage. This flexible payment system helps bring down the overall cost of owning an EV, making it more affordable compared to traditional ICE vehicles.
Customers also benefit from a lifetime battery warranty for the first owner, a buyback guarantee of 60% after three years or 45,000 kilometers, and one year of free public charging.
These added incentives make the JSW MG Windsor not just an affordable option but also a smart long-term investment.
Financial Benefits for EV Buyers
Parth Jindal, Director of JSW MG Motor India, highlighted the financial advantages of the BaaS model. Comparing the monthly expenses of owning an ICE vehicle versus an EV under the BaaS plan, Jindal noted that a ₹9 lakh ICE car typically costs around ₹38,000 per month when fuel and servicing are included.
Meanwhile, the MG Windsor EV, priced at ₹9.99 lakh, will incur a total monthly cost of approximately ₹36,250, which includes the EMI and battery rental fees.
This comparison shows that EV ownership under the BaaS model is not only affordable but also offers additional benefits such as reduced maintenance and fuel costs. As a result, EVs are becoming increasingly attractive for budget-conscious consumers looking for both savings and sustainability.
Comprehensive Customer Support and Training
To support this shift toward electric vehicles, MG Motor is investing in extensive customer training programs. These initiatives aim to ensure that both employees and dealers are well-equipped to explain the new ownership model to potential buyers, simplifying the process and addressing any concerns they may have.
Additionally, MG Motor is offering several benefits to early adopters of the Windsor, including a lifetime battery warranty and a guaranteed 60% buyback value after three years. These offers are intended to make the transition to EV ownership smoother and more financially secure for buyers.
Competing in a Growing Market
The launch of the MG Windsor is part of MG Motor’s broader plan to dominate the Indian EV market. As electric vehicles gain popularity, the company is positioning itself to be a leader in this sector, targeting more than 50% of its sales from EVs shortly.
With competitors like Tata Motors, Hyundai, and Maruti Suzuki also entering the EV market, the race to win over Indian consumers is heating up.
JSW MG Motor is not just focused on selling more electric vehicles but also on driving innovation within the industry. The company is actively exploring options to localize EV battery production and assembly and has even hinted at the possibility of venturing into battery cell manufacturing.
Expanding India’s EV Future
Rajeev Chaba, President and Managing Director of MG Motor India, expressed confidence in the JSW MG Windsor’s potential to attract new customers to the electric vehicle market. “The Windsor will certainly invite newer sets of customers to try EVs. We are addressing the barrier of incremental upfront cost and supporting easy ownership,” he said.
MG Motor’s focus on affordability, ease of ownership, and innovative pricing models is expected to play a crucial role in expanding India’s electric vehicle market.
By lowering acquisition costs and providing comprehensive support, the company is making EVs more accessible to the general public, contributing to India’s push for greener mobility solutions.
A Greener Tomorrow
With the JSW MG Windsor car, MG Motor India is taking a major step toward making electric vehicles mainstream. By offering innovative ownership options like the BaaS model, the company is breaking down financial barriers and encouraging widespread EV adoption across the country.
As the EV market continues to grow, MG Motor is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of India’s automotive industry.
