Question 1

1. What's the first step for a petrol station adding EV charging without disrupting fuel sales?

Accepted Answer

Start with a single pilot site — 1–2 chargers on spare electrical capacity, physically separated from fuel-dispensing lanes so the two customer flows never queue against each other. Measure utilization and attach rate for a full quarter before committing capital to a forecourt-wide upgrade.

Question 2

2. How much power capacity does a forecourt need for DC fast charging?

Accepted Answer

A single 60–120 kW charger usually runs on a pilot site's existing supply. Once you scale to 4–8 concurrent DC fast chargers, most existing petrol pump sites need a transformer and grid-connection upgrade — this is typically the largest capital line item in moving past the pilot phase.

Question 3

3. Can drivers pay for fuel and EV charging through one loyalty account?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if the retailer runs unified payment and billing software across both — points earned on a fuel purchase can be redeemed against a charging session and vice versa. Retailers report this is what keeps a driver loyal to the brand instead of whichever charger is free nearby.

Question 4

4. How long does an EV charging session take compared to a fuel fill-up?

Accepted Answer

A fuel fill-up takes under 5 minutes; a DC fast-charging session takes 15–35 minutes depending on charger power and battery state. That difference is the entire basis of the forecourt retail opportunity — KPMG estimates it could drive up to 80% of fuel retail profit from non-fuel sales by the mid-2030s.

Question 5

5. Do Indian regulations require petrol pumps to install EV chargers?

Accepted Answer

Some states already mandate it: Maharashtra's 2025 State EV Policy requires fast chargers at every fuel station, and Kerala and Tamil Nadu carry similar requirements for new outlets. Nationally, the Ministry of Power's 2024 guidelines declared charging a delicensed activity, lowering the compliance bar for retailers adding it to an existing licensed site.

Question 6

6. How can a single platform manage both fuel and EV charging operations?

Accepted Answer

A charging management platform consolidates charger uptime, session data, tariffs and payment reconciliation into the same operational dashboard a retailer already uses for fuel-side reporting — so a regional manager monitors one network instead of two disconnected systems.
