However, preparing and laying out things a little ahead of time may be advantageous for everyone involved, particularly if you own an electric vehicle. 

And this is especially true in India, where EV charging infrastructure is still in its infancy. While the year 2020 has transformed society in many different ways, two things particularly stick out to me: road trips and electric vehicles. Road vacations are rising, but air travel is down due to the coronavirus. 

Simultaneously, an increasing number of drivers are opting for electric vehicles, with acceptance gradually increasing in both the United States and internationally.

Overall, there are numerous advantages to going green. Not only is driving an electric vehicle better for the planet, but it also permits you to use HOV lanes in several states. You’ll also save money on petrol, and don’t get me started on how beneficial having two trunks is (thanks to no engine). It’s not the same as driving a gas vehicle on the highway, and novices to the electric car world may be put off if they don’t realize what to anticipate.

1. Choose the right EV for road trips. 

If you’re looking for an electric vehicle and intend to road travel with it, there are a few things to keep in mind. Here are a few points to bear in mind as you shop for a vehicle. Some of these concerns cover range — and if range anxiety is a dealbreaker, a plug-in hybrid might suit you better.

How heat affects your EV’s battery and range

Lithium-ion batteries are happiest between roughly 15°C and 35°C. Once ambient temperatures climb past 40°C — routine across large parts of India for three to five months a year — the battery’s internal chemistry has to work harder, and the car’s thermal management system kicks in to keep cells within a safe range. That’s good for battery health, but it means some of the energy you’d otherwise use for driving goes toward cooling the pack instead. Repeated heat-cool cycling over hundreds of trips is also a factor in long-term battery degradation, so parking in shade and avoiding unnecessary fast-charging in the hottest part of the day both help protect range over the life of the vehicle.

AC drain: budget extra range for the heat

Unlike a petrol car, an EV has no engine waste heat to lean on and no belt-driven compressor riding along for free — every watt used to cool the cabin comes straight out of the same battery that moves the car. In mild weather, running the AC typically trims 3–10% off real-world range. In genuine Indian peak-summer conditions — 38–45°C and above — that climbs to an estimated 15–30%, since the compressor has to fight both cabin heat and, indirectly, a hotter battery pack. When you’re mapping stops for a summer road trip, pad your range estimate accordingly instead of planning to the last kilometre of the rated figure.

Charging speed and battery behavior in hot weather

Charging speed isn’t constant in extreme heat. Once battery or charger temperatures approach the 45–55°C range, the battery management system and the charger’s own thermal protection both start throttling output to protect the cells — a session that would take 30 minutes on a cool day can stretch meaningfully longer at midday in peak summer. It’s rarely a safety issue, since that throttling is exactly what protects the battery, but it does change your math on a multi-stop trip. Charging earlier or later in the day, or during a meal stop after the car and station have had time to cool, tends to be faster than trying to fast-charge in direct afternoon sun.

Beating peak-season crowding: check before you detour

Summer holidays (roughly April through June) are one of the busiest road-trip windows of the year in India — which means stations along popular routes see more traffic right when the heat is also at its worst.
