What is EV100 Initiative ? List of Member Companies and Relevance for India

EV100 is a global initiative bringing together companies committed to switching their owned and contracted fleets up to 7.5t to electric vehicles and installing charging infrastructure for employees and customers by 2030. Companies joining EV100 make a public commitment to at least one of the following by 2030:

  • Switch their fleets to electric vehicles, and/or
  • Install EV charging for staff and/or customers.

The EV100 initiative is led by Climate Group, an international non-profit founded in 2003, with offices in London, New York, New Delhi, Amsterdam and Beijing. Climate Group’s goal is for a world of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, with greater prosperity for all and works with leaders and decision makers from business and government to help shape the market frameworks that can help the world achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Under2 Coalition

The Climate Group’s initiative, Under2 Coalition, is the largest global network of state and regional governments committed to reducing emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. The initiative brings together over 270 governments representing 1.75 billion people and 50% of the global economy. Its members commit to keep global temperature rise well below 2°C with efforts to reach 1.5°C. In October 2021, Under2 Coalition announced its transition to become a ‘net zero coalition’ by 2050.

EV100 in India

Currently, the Earth is already about 1.1°C warmer than it was in the late 1800s, and emissions continue to rise. To keep global warming to no more than 1.5°C – as called for in the Paris Agreement – emissions need to be reduced by 45% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.

India has also promised to cut its emissions to net zero by 2070, India is the world’s fourth biggest emitter of carbon dioxide after China, the US and the EU. However, our emissions per capita are much lower than other major world economies. India emitted 1.9 tonnes of CO2 per head of population in 2019, compared with 15.5 tonnes for the US and 12.5 tonnes for Russia that year.

Additionally, India has also promised to get 50% of its energy from renewable resources by 2030, and by the same year to reduce total projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes.

As of July 2022, there are 12 India-headquartered EV100 members and over other 15 global members with operations in India. The initiative is trying to help shape the electric vehicle ecosystem in India with technical, policy and market expertise.

Additionally in consultation with industry experts, EV100 Initiative supports members in India by developing knowledge products for businesses and industry segments to move towards 100% EV adoption by 2030.
