Samsung’s Solid-State Batteries: The Future of EVs
Samsung’s solid-state battery is based on new technology. It uses solid material instead of liquid for the electrolyte. This makes the battery safer, lighter, and more powerful. The prototype has an energy density of 500 Wh/kg. Current EV batteries have about 270 Wh/kg. These new batteries could last for 20 years.
“We plan to mass-produce these batteries by 2027,” Samsung SDI said. They have already sent test batteries to EV manufacturers. The feedback has been very positive.

The best feature of Samsung’s new battery is its fast charging. It can go from 10% to 80% in 9 minutes. Most EVs today take 30 minutes to a few hours for a similar charge. For example, in India, the Tata Nexon EV and MG ZS EV take about 60 minutes to charge from 0% to 80%.
Ola Electric is also working on new battery technology. Their new cells are five times more powerful than current ones. Chairman Bhavish Aggarwal said they are testing solid-state batteries too.

This technology is promising but expensive. Samsung’s solid-state batteries will first appear in luxury EVs. These cars will benefit from the long-range and quick charging.
The global race for better batteries is intense. Chinese companies like CATL are also developing advanced batteries. CATL’s new battery promises a 20-year lifespan, similar to Samsung’s.
