Norway's EV Market Hits 96.4% in September as Tesla Dominates: New EV Record in Norway

In September 2024, electric vehicles (EVs) continued to dominate Norway’s car market, with 96.4% of new car registrations being battery-electric. Of the 12,966 cars sold, 12,495 were fully electric, leaving only 471 with non-electric powertrains.

This new high comes just a month after EVs held a 94.3% market share in August, setting a short-lived record. The increase was largely due to a surge in Tesla deliveries.

According to Norway’s road authority, OFV, a large shipment of Teslas contributed significantly to the jump in EV registrations in September.

EV registrations rose by 25.4% compared to the same period in 2023 when just under 9,000 electric cars were registered.

Despite new taxes on higher-priced electric vehicles and changing policies around electric vehicle benefits like tolls and public transport lanes, electric cars continue to dominate the market.

OFV Director Øyvind Solberg Thorsen noted an economic recovery and an uptick in dealership visits as contributing factors to the growth in sales.

Tesla led the market, with the Model Y taking the top spot with 2,107 new registrations. The Tesla Model 3 followed closely, with 2,067 units sold. The Volvo EX30, Skoda Enyaq, and Toyota bZ4X rounded out the top five.

In contrast, petrol and diesel car sales have sharply declined, accounting for just 0.4% and 1.0% of the market, respectively. Plug-in hybrids and petrol hybrids also saw minimal sales.

As Norway approaches its 2025 target of all new electric cars, EVs are already nearing full market dominance.
