EV charging stations to be added to paid parking zones in Dubai

Dubai is driving its electric vehicle (EV) revolution to new heights. Dubai administration announced a major expansion of Dubai EV charging stations in paid parking zones. This initiative, spearheaded by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), aims to support the growing number of electric vehicles in the emirate.

By April 2024, Dubai’s EV count had surpassed 30,000, reflecting the city’s commitment to clean energy. DEWA’s MD and CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, anticipates this number will continue to rise. He revealed that over 15,000 customers had joined the EV Green Charger initiative by March 2024.

DEWA partnered with Parkin, Dubai’s largest provider of paid public parking facilities. This collaboration will bring more EV ‘Green Charger’ stations to key locations managed by Parkin. The move aligns with Parkin’s strategy to capitalize on the booming EV sector.

Parkin highlighted the crucial role their facilities will play in the EV transition. “Recharging electric vehicles with clean energy takes time,” they explained. “Our parking network provides convenient access to charging services, encouraging EV adoption.” This integration supports Parkin’s growth strategy and enhances their platform’s capabilities.

Parkin currently oversees more than 197,000 parking spaces in Dubai. With this expansion, these spaces will now offer essential EV charging services. Since 2015, DEWA’s EV Green Charger initiative has supported an electric vehicle distance of approximately 130 million kilometers.

Registering an EV with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai grants customers an EV Green Charger account from DEWA. This account allows them to charge their EV within one hour. Even unregistered customers can use the guest mode feature to charge their vehicles.

This initiative reflects Dubai’s forward-thinking approach to sustainable transportation. By increasing the availability of charging stations, the city aims to make EVs more accessible and convenient for residents and visitors alike. The partnership between DEWA and Parkin exemplifies Dubai’s commitment to integrating clean energy solutions into everyday life.

The introduction of more Dubai EV charging stations in paid parking zones will likely accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles. As charging infrastructure becomes more widespread, potential EV buyers may feel more confident in their decision to switch from traditional gasoline-powered cars. This move not only supports Dubai’s sustainability goals but also positions the city as a leader in the global shift towards electric mobility.
