Electric vehicle charging stations in India saw a dramatic rise in electricity consumption during Q1 FY25. Data shows a 108% surge in energy usage compared to last year. Read ahead…
The electricity consumed by public charging stations (PCSs) for electric vehicles (EVs) in India more than doubled in the first quarter of FY25, reflecting the country’s rapid EV growth.
PCSs consumed 176.87 million units (MU) of energy between April and June 2024, marking a 108% year-on-year increase from 84.95 MU in Q1 FY24.
This rise aligns with the surge in EV registrations, which jumped by 42% in FY24, with 16.81 lakh units sold.
As of July 2024, India had 45.75 lakh registered EVs, with 3.94 lakh units sold in the first quarter of FY25.
Delhi led the nation in energy consumption by public charging stations, using 83.86 MU, accounting for 47% of the total.
Maharashtra followed with 44.48 MU, and Gujarat was third with 14.38 MU.
The growth in EVs has driven expansion in charging infrastructure. The number of public battery electric vehicle (BEV) charging stations grew from 1,800 in February 2022 to 16,347 in March 2024.
By 2030, India is expected to have 50 million EVs, requiring the installation of 1.32 million chargers.
The growing need for both AC slow and DC fast chargers reflects India’s unique demand.
Two- and three-wheelers mainly use slow charging, while cars and buses will require a combination of AC and DC chargers, especially as public charging stations demand increases.
