Tata Motors debuts Tata Sierra Electric SUV at Auto Expo

Tata Motors is working tirelessly to make sure that it offers a wide selection of products in the EV industry since it expects to hold the top rank in the future as well. The Sierra from Tata Motors is one of the most anticipated electric vehicles since it would revive a well-known automobile brand in the Indian market. Tata Motors unveiled the Harrier EV and Sierra Electric SUV pre-production concepts at the 2023 Auto Expo.

The Sierra was one of the most dependable 4×4 SUVs in the nation in the 1990s. Fans still recall the brand name even though the brand wasn’t active on roads for a while. Tata Motors had previously exhibited a Sierra concept model at the previous Auto Expo in 2020. The business approved bringing back the Sierra nameplate as a solely electric vehicle offering in 2020. Now, in 2023, people can view an updated version of the same car.

According to Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility’s managing director Shailesh Chandra, the company plans to expand its lineup with an all-electric SUV. As a result of the brand effectively ruling out the prospect of a 4×4 drivetrain in an ICE vehicle, the next EV offering may be an SUV that meets this requirement.

The highly ambitious Curvy Concept, which is built on the Gen 2 platform, was introduced by Tata Motors last year. A wide variety of powertrains, including battery- and IC engine-powered setups and various drivetrain alternatives, can be supported by this architecture. This architecture, which goes by the name Sigma, is based on the X4 or ALFA platform created by Punch and Altroz.

To prevent any limitations and to maximize packing, it has undergone extensive re-engineering around a battery pack. The ALFA platform must go through a number of changes in order to do this, including the removal of the transmission tunnel, improvements to the fuel tank area, and the pushing of side members to the flanks to make room.

Compared to ICE platform-based EVs like Nexon EV and Tigor EV, the Sigma platform is anticipated to be lighter, more energy-efficient, and more spacious as a result of these upgrades. The Sierra EV electric SUV is currently under development, and it probably won’t make its production debut until 2025. It is a part of Tata’s aspirations to create up to six additional EVs in the upcoming several years.

In contrast to the 2020 Sierra concept, which had three doors, the production-spec Sierra EV will have a typical, five-door configuration. The 2023 Sierra that was displayed in the Auto Expo, has five doors. Future output from Tata’s production line is anticipated to include more electric SUVs supported by both Gen 2 and Gen 3 platforms.
