According to data provided by the Center-controlled Vahan, two domestic start-ups have taken the top two spots in the electric bus rankings this year, while Tata Motors comes in the fifth position. Having registered 547 electric bus vehicles between January and September, Delhi-based PMI Electro, a five-year-old business, dominates e-bus segment in India. Olectra Greentech, a company situated in Hyderabad, took second place with 443 registrations within the same time.

With 259 e-buses at the end of the same period, Gurugram-based JBM Auto emerged as the third-largest player. Switch Mobility, a member of the Ashok Leyland Group, ranked fourth with 222 e-buses. In the same time frame, Tata Motors delivered 110 e-buses, and holds the position of the market leader in 2021.

In contrast to the passenger car industry, the e-bus industry’s numbers are based on delivery schedules established with vendors. Since e-buses have been made available, PMI Electro and Olectra, both of them who dominates the e-bus segment which have technology collaborations with China-based firms Foton and BYD, respectively, have also emerged as the market leaders. More than 835 e-buses have been sold under both names so far, compared to 742 sold under Tata Motors.

“PMI’s focus has been to set achievable targets. Instead of bidding for large scale tenders and then struggling with deliveries, we have chosen to bid for smaller tenders and deliver electric buses to STUs on time. This strategy of timely fulfilling orders has helped us get more tenders from several STUs, thereby improving our overall position,” said a PMI Electro representative.

“Delivery of electric buses is governed as per the negotiated timetables between the OEM and the state transport undertakings/tenderers,” said Rohit Srivastava, vice president, product line – buses, Tata Motors. According to the agreements, Tata Motors has been delivering e-buses and will do so going forward. According to PMI Electro, the business can create 8 electric buses per day, which has aided in on-time delivery of orders to STUs.

3,800 electric buses from the Convergence Energy Services (CESL) tender as well as 200 e-buses from the Jammu and Kashmir government have been confirmed orders for Tata Motors. As part of the National Electric Bus Programme, which seeks to deploy 50,000 electric buses, CESL has announced a second tender for 5,690 electric buses, following the previous 5,450 e-bus tender.
